Hey team!
As a part of National Science Week, we’re putting on a a full-day fair celebrating the future of flight, and showcasing the fantastic eVTOL student team.
An eVTOL is an Electric Veritical Takeoff and Landing aircraft, often called an Autonomous Air Taxi.
These aircraft will be an extremely versatile new form of transportation in the near future, capable of flying autonomously from Maroocydore to Brisbane in 20 minutes (and totally avoiding the Bruce).
Together with the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sunshine Coast Council, and Queensland Government – the MEF has been developing our very own eVTOL with the support and commitment of over 50 students since August 2023.
Our full scale aircraft will seat one person and can fly at speeds of over 250 km/h for distances over 200km up to an altitude of 3000 ft, and can takeoff and land on a helipad. It will be mostly carbon fiber composite with some aerospace grade aluminium, titanium, glass, and a small amount of steel.
There’s a lot involved in building an eVTOL, there’s the design, the structure, the electronics, motors and batteries, the computer vision, and much much more.
We’ve got 2 sub-scale models, at a 12:1 and 6:1, which we’ve been building and flying since we started, as well as a Virtual Reality model to experience what it’s like to fly in it, some large-scale non-flying models, and a whole lot more.
Our amazing students and industry mentors will be showing all of this off on the day, which will also include being able to design, 3D print, and launch your very own glider, experience a 6-degree-of-freedom flight simulator, and much, much more.
There will also be loads of food, drink, ice cream, and fun 🚀
It’s a free, family oriented event that’s perfect for kids young and old, with the aim of raising awareness of the local aviation and manufacturing industry, STEM careers, and being a fun and education weekend event that celebrates the innovativeness of our nation.
Please tell your friends, we hope to see you there!
